System Expansion and Substitution

A way of handling multifunctional processes by widening the system to include the products it replaces. Reclaimed water used for irrigation, for example, is credited with the freshwater abstraction and treatment it avoids. The approach reflects what actually changes in the world, but the result depends heavily on which avoided product is assumed — a choice AWARE’s rules aim to make consistent.
