Partners

Six institutions, six countries, one method.

Six research institutions from four EU member states, Türkiye and Brazil, coordinated by Università Niccolò Cusano in Rome.

Each partner brings different expertise and works with water utilities, companies and communities in its own country. If you would like to connect with the project, start with the partner closest to you or the one whose expertise matches yours.

LCAS-LCALife cycle costingMethod development

UNC coordinates the AWARE project and leads the development of its core method. The team brings together substantial expertise in Life Cycle Assessment and environmental engineering, led by Coordinator Prof. Lidia Lombardi, together with specialists in Social Life Cycle Assessment (Prof. Gabriella Arcese, co-author of the UNEP S-LCA Guidelines), economics (Prof. Tamara Menichini), LCA (Barbara Mendecka), and social science (MariaGiovina Pasca). UNC has previously led EU-funded initiatives on Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment training (LIFE-C, Erasmus+), biorefinery process evaluation (BBCircle), sustainable antimicrobial packaging (SAPHIRA, PRIMA 2023), and LCA of innovative ship paintings (PAINT-IT, LIFE programme), giving the coordinating team direct, hands-on experience across the full LCSA methodology it will now tailor for WRR&R.

Wastewater reuseSewage sludgeLCADissemination

HMU brings significant work experience in sewage sludge management and wastewater reuse, together with strong relationships with water authorities in Greece and Cyprus, led by Prof. V. Tzanakakis and Prof. T. Manios, with LCA expertise contributed by Ms. A. Katrini. The team's track record includes the PURE project (LIFE08 ENV/GR/000551), which transformed treated wastewater into an alternative water resource in semi-arid regions of Crete, and the ongoing LIFE22-ENV-EL-HIPPOCRATES project on removing emerging contaminants from hospital wastewater. This direct experience with the Hersonissos WWTP case study underpins HMU's role as leader of dissemination and exploitation activities (WP6).

Sustainable water managementCircular economySocio-economic analysis

Led by Dr. Eleonora Santos, the IPL team specializes in sustainable water management and circular economy practices, bringing a wealth of experience in integrating economic and social considerations into water management strategies. Milena Carvalho and Susana Martins from the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (IPP) join as external members, reinforcing the team's know-how in effective WRR&R solutions and strengthening the socio-economic dimension of the AWARE method applied to the Lisbon study cases.

Emerging contaminantsEnvironmental chemistryWastewater treatment

The UNICAMP team, led by Prof. Dr. C.C. Montagner, has significant work experience in emerging contaminants, complemented by expertise in environmental chemistry (Dr. M. A. Dias) and wastewater treatment (Dr. L. de S. Leite). This background is directly relevant to the Campinas study case — the EPAR Capivari II plant, the first large-scale membrane bioreactor facility of its kind in Latin America — and brings a Global South perspective on sanitation and water reuse challenges to the AWARE consortium.

LCAWastewater reuseWastewater treatment

The ITU team, led by Prof. Dr. Ismail Koyuncu, has significant work experience in LCA and wastewater reuse, with further expertise in LCA (Asst. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin Pasaoglu), wastewater reuse (Asst. Prof. Dr. Recep Kaya, Asst. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Yüksekdağ, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Börte Köse Mutlu), and wastewater treatment (Dr. Meltem Ağtaş). ITU previously evaluated wastewater treatment plants and water reuse under a HORIZON-CL4-2022-RESILIENCE-01 project, experience that carries directly into the AWARE industrial study case at the ÖZEN İPLİK textile facility.

LCADecision support systemsGreywater reuseEmerging contaminants

ICRA's team has significant work experience in LCA, led by Dr. Lluís Corominas, together with expertise in multicriteria decision support systems and greywater treatment and reuse (Prof. J. Comas) and emerging contaminants (Dr. Meritxell Gros). ICRA has led the design, installation, and testing of an experimental green wall facility for greywater treatment under the H2020 MULTISOURCE and WATER4ALL NEWater projects, and has coordinated best-practice guides for applying LCA to wastewater treatment through the IWA working group on LCA and NewBIES. This experience positions ICRA to lead the Study Cases work package (WP3).
