Study Cases

Five water reuse schemes where the AWARE method is developed and tested.

The AWARE method is developed and tested on real water reuse schemes: at least one study case per partner, spanning urban, industrial and agricultural sectors, plus additional cases identified through stakeholder engagement.

Is your scheme next?

AWARE is looking for additional study cases in the urban, industrial and agricultural sectors. Participation is voluntary, free of charge and covered by a data-sharing agreement.

The AWARE study cases are: Hersonissos, Crete (GR), Lisbon (PT), Campinas (BR), ÖZEN İPLİK, Istanbul (TR), Girona (ES). Each is described in full below.

Hersonissos, Crete

Lead partner
HMU
Sector
Urban and agricultural reuse (tourism area)
Plant / technology
Municipal WWTP with full effluent reuse
Operator
D.E.Y.A.X.

Greece's first licensed WWTP for full effluent reuse, managed by D.E.Y.A.X. Upgraded during the PURE project (LIFE08 ENV/GR/000551), it is a model for water reuse in irrigating olive trees, homes, and hotel gardens. The area hosts over 250 hotels (100,000 beds), generating over 1.5 million m³ of wastewater annually (April–November).

Municipal WWTPs (Beirolas, Chelas, Alcântara); hotel case in the Algarve
Operator
Águas do Tejo Atlântico

The Beirolas, Chelas, and Alcântara wastewater treatment plants, publicly owned by Águas do Tejo Atlântico, are part of Lisbon's Strategic Plan for Water Reuse, promoting recycled effluent for non-potable urban uses (green area irrigation, street cleaning). The Wyndham Grand Algarve Hotel also participates as a case study.
