Elementary Flow

A material or energy flow that crosses the boundary between the technical system and the environment without further human transformation: water abstracted from a river, carbon dioxide released to air, phosphorus discharged to a lake. Impact assessment works on elementary flows, which is why the inventory must ultimately be expressed in them.
