Capital and Operating Expenditure (CAPEX / OPEX)

CAPEX is the upfront investment — building the plant, membranes, pumps, pipes. OPEX is the running cost — energy, chemicals, staff, maintenance, sludge disposal. Water reuse technologies often trade one against the other: advanced treatment such as membrane bioreactors can cost more to build and run, but produce water fit for higher-value uses.
