Acidification

The build-up of acidity in soils, lakes and forests caused mainly by sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and ammonia, which return to the ground in rain or as deposits. It harms vegetation, aquatic life and soil organisms. In water systems it is driven chiefly by the fossil electricity used for pumping and aeration.
