Foreground and Background Data
Foreground data describe the processes a study is directly about and can measure — the energy meter and chemical dosing records of a specific treatment plant. Background data describe generic supply chains — the electricity grid mix or the production of a chemical — and usually come from commercial or public LCA databases. Results are only as good as the foreground data, and only as comparable as the background choices.
