Primary and Secondary Data
Primary data are measured or calculated directly from the process being studied — meter readings, dosing logs, lab analyses of effluent quality. Secondary data come from elsewhere: databases, literature, industry averages. A study should use primary data wherever the results are sensitive to them, which for treatment plants usually means energy use, chemical consumption and direct emissions.
